Lee Stewart studied Music (Voice and Choral Directing) and Business Education at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, 1955 – 1958, graduating with a BS Ed degree. She taught music in Scott City High School, Scott City, Missouri, 1958 – 1961, and in Del Paso Junior High, Del Paso Heights (Sacramento), California, 1962.

From 1963 to 1976 Lee gave birth to five children, all born at home and all breastfed. During this time she became a Certified Childbirth Educator (CCE) through the Academy of Husband-Coached Childbirth (AAHCC), Sherman Oaks, California, and a breastfeeding consultant as a La Leche League Leader. She taught classes on natural childbirth and breastfeeding for expectant parents.  In October, 1986, Lee was invited, all expenses paid, as a representative of the United States, to speak on homebirth at an International Childbirth Conference in London, England.
